Friends of Great Kids Farm

Who We Are

We are a 33 acre outdoor learning laboratory that provides Baltimore City Public Schools students with hands-on, real world experiences. The Farm engages students from pre-kindergarten through graduation in programs that begin with experiential learning visits and culminate in career pathways. More than two thousand City School students utilize the farm annually to connect classroom curriculum to the world around them through experiential learning. Friends of Great Kids Farm (?Friends?) is a 501c (3) nonprofit organization, founded by a diverse and committed group of Farm supporters in 2011. Our Board, its committees and volunteers are dedicated to raising whatever additional funds and resources are needed for Great Kids Farm to take full advantage of its potential to offer dynamic and effective experiential learning to all Baltimore City School students.

What We Do

Our Mission Great Kids Farm provides opportunities for Baltimore City Public School students to understand and participate in every aspect of food preparation - from seed to fork - and prepares them to lead 21st century sustainability efforts. Our Vision We envision a new generation of healthy, creative young people fully aware of their ability to live lightly, profitably and joyfully with one another on this earth. l Since 1912, the land that is now Great Kids Farm has given generations of young people the opportunity to study the world they would come to inherit. What is now Great Kids Farm began with the vision of Reverend George Freedman Bragg in 1912 when he founded an orphanage here. The rich history of this place, which has since served young people as a school, a nature study center, and a horticultural skills center, is evident across the landscape from the stone buildings and mature trees all the way down to the marbles we find in the soil of our vegetables fields where children, who are now grandparents, once played on the playground. In the past century, skillful students and caring teachers built these stone buildings by hand, planted these trees from seed, and took great joy in sharing these learning experiences here. We fully expect the study and work of the students at Great Kids Farm today to leave an equally impressive legacy for those who will inherit this world from them.
