After witnessing the crippling effects of poverty, violence, and substance abuse of community children and families every day, veteran ABC2 NEWS video journalist, Preston Mitchum, Jr., founded The Preston Mitchum, Jr. Foundation in 2002. His vision for the foundation is to effect major change in the Baltimore Metropolitan community by enriching the lives of children and adults who desperately need assistance. The foundation also fuels his passion to encourage others to make a difference in our community. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization dedicated to providing people the opportunity to donate their time by volunteering for donation drives, youth initiatives, and making financial contributions for organization projects.
Community donations have helped over 26,400 men, women, and children since inception. Giving Back Campaigns are coordinated throughout the year to encourage others to help those in need. The campaigns are donation drives which provide youth, homeless and transitional shelters with the necessities for individuals and families. There are two yearly drives -- a Back-to-School Drive from July through August to collect school supplies and another drive for the Holiday season from November through December. With the help of our partners, both annual drives are supported throughout the state. The PMJ Foundation works diligently to provide programs and resources for low income families, especially our youth. Education is the key to success for today's youth. Unfortunately, many students attend school under challenging circumstances and need support. Many need to overcome an obstacle course of economic distress, domestic instability, community violence and a lack of resources. Our programs are designed to help students be successful in their academic course of study while engaging, empowering and stabilizing families as they build brighter futures. ? Together, we can present possibilities for a brighter future for our at-risk youth while changing our own. It just takes you.
